FIREFLY is a multi-service, non-profit organization providing a wide range of services for children, youth, and families in communities across Northwestern Ontario. They are dedicated to supporting and strengthening the health and well-being of families, children, and youth through emotional, physical, developmental, and community services.  Located in Kenora, Ontario with frequent travel to the surrounding communities, primarily by car.  

Supervision is provided by licensed psychology staff who are consultants working for Firefly.


rotation experiences

Assessments:

  • Psychological (mental health) assessment for children and youth
  • Autism diagnostic assessments for children and youth
  • Opportunities for neuropsychological assessment with Northwestern Ontario FASD diagnostic clinic (if supervision is available)

Psychotherapy:

  • Opportunities to provide individual and group psychotherapy via telehealth to children and adolescents with developmental differences for a variety of complex trauma and mental health concerns
  • Opportunities to gain experience with different therapeutic modalities, including CBT, trauma-focused CBT, DBT, and behavioural therapy

Consultation:

  • Opportunities to provide consultation to community schools and community programs
  • Opportunities to collaborate with allied health professionals on a multi-disciplinary team

Education:

  • Opportunities to participate in community education initiatives, including workshops and social media
  • Opportunities to participate in multidisciplinary education with the Firefly team

Additional Opportunities:

  • Opportunities to participate in Indigenous cultural education as well as ceremony and other traditional activities
  • Opportunity to receive formal ADOS-2 training
  • Opportunities to participate in program development and evaluation


housing information

Due to low housing vacancy rates, free accommodation is provided to residents matched to FIREFLY located in Kenora, Ontario.  This is in addition to the standard stipend given to residents.  This is a shared housing style, with other visiting health care professionals who are in and out of the city.  The resident may also choose to arrange alternate accommodation if they desire at their own cost.
