Minimum Training Requirements for Applicants

Education:

Enrolment in a CPA- or APA-accredited Ph.D. or Psy.D training program (or equivalent) in Clinical, School, Developmental or Counseling Psychology.  An applicants’ dissertation proposal must have been approved by their dissertation advisory committee prior to application.  It is preferable that applicants have also collected and analysed their data, completed a draft of their dissertation, and, whenever possible, have successfully defended their doctoral dissertation prior to beginning the residency year.  Applicants must have completed all course work necessary in the above mentioned degree programs.

Applicants must have completed a minimum of 300 hours of Direct Practicum (Intervention, Assessment, and Supervision) experience and a minimum of 600 practicum hours (which includes the 300 direct hours).  In order for practice hours to "count", the following requirements must be met:

                                i.            Must have been supervised by a registered or licensed psychological practitioner

                                ii.            Must have received academic credit with their academic training Program.

Applicants must have completed a graduate level course in psychological assessment and have accrued a minimum of 75 assessment experience practicum hours.


Who is Eligible to Apply?

We are a CPA accredited internship, and therefore accept applicants from CPA accredited universities, or equivalent status. 

PLEASE NOTE:  We do not consider applications from individuals ineligible to work in Canada at the time the internship start date would commence.  This includes U.S. Citizens or Citizens from other countries who do not ALREADY have in place the appropriate approved work visas, permits to work in Canada, or immigration related documents that are valid for the time period that the resident applicant would be enrolled and completing their residency training year.  If you are an international student attending a Canadian University and have the appropriate work visa / permit for employment in Canada you are welcome to apply.  Canadian Citizens, Landed Immigrants in Canada who are completing graduate training the USA may still apply based on their eligibility to work in Canada.

TO ENSURE THAT THIS RESIDENCY PROGRAM IS A SUITABLE MATCH FOR YOUR PERSONAL CIRCUMSTANCES, BEFORE APPLYING, PLEASE REVIEW THE CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT THAT ALL MATCH APPLICANTS WILL BE REQUIRED TO FULFILL:

All applicants should be aware of the following conditions of employment:

  • Mask Fitting – St. Joseph’s Care Group has a mandatory Mask-Fit Policy that requires ALL employees (residents are employees) to complete a mask fit test at the start of their employment.  In order to be mask fit at the time of testing, employees must be clean-shaven, and when required, to wear the respirator in the area where the respirator contacts the skin in order to achieve a proper seal between their face and the respirator face-piece. 
  • COVID Vaccination - Proof of COVID-19 vaccination or proof of valid medical exemption as per the SJCG Immunization Policy IMS-04-005 which states all staff, agency staff/ contract workers, professional staff, students/learners and volunteers who work for, or enter a work site operated by St. Joseph’s Care Group, must have received a complete primary series of their COVID-19 vaccine.  All new staff hired by SJCG must provide proof of complete primary series as defined in section 3, as a condition of employment or placement unless provided an exemption based on a valid reason protected under the Ontario Human Rights Code the Ontario Human Rights Code.
  • Immunization Status and Record of Proof - The Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) / Ontario Medical Association (OMA) Communicable Disease Surveillance Protocols for Ontario Hospitals (in accordance with the Long Term Care Act and the Public Hospitals Act) are adhered to as part of St. Joseph’s Care Group’s Employment Health Surveillance Program and applies to all workers and volunteers carrying on work activities at St. Joseph’s Care Group.  As part of your health review during onboarding, you will be required to complete a health history form, share documentation of your immunization status against Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR), Chickenpox (Varicella-Zoster), Hepatitis B, Tetanus/Diptheria/Pertussis (Td/Tdap), and annual Influenza vaccination status.
  • 2-step Tuberculosis Skin Test (TBST) -  A record of past 2-step Tuberculosis Skin Test (TBST) and completion of a SJCG health assessment form are requirements for all workers performing work activities as St. Joseph’s Care Group employees
  • If you have had a past TB Test given more than 12 months prior to their start date, a 1-step will be provided as part of the pre-placement health review.
  • If you have never had a TB test, you may arrange to have a 2-step Tuberculosis Skin Test (TBST) completed with your health care provider and obtain a copy for the Occupational Health and Safety Department.
  • Police Vulnerable Sector Check - A recent Police Vulnerable Sector Check that is determined to be negative and/or pose no significant risk to clients you may be in contact with during your residency rotation is required. The Police Vulnerable Sector Check must be conducted by a local to you (where you have been living prior to re-locating for internship) police force and be completed within six months prior to your start date. Our Human Resources Department can provide you with a letter to help facilitate this process should you determine you need one.
  • Professional Liability Insurance – You must obtain your obtain your own professional liability insurance (or have your academic institution forward proof that you are covered under their liability insurance) for a minimum of 5 million dollars per occurrence for the duration of your residency. Many working professionals purchase the insurance supported by and endorsed by the Canadian Psychological Association. A copy of your insurance certificate will need to be forwarded ahead of time to the Director of Training or brought in on the first day of employment.

REMUNERATION:

Annual salary is $39,000.00 ($CAN) with 4% vacation pay (equivalent to 10 paid vacation days).  Residents are also eligible for 11 paid statutory holidays, one floater day to take as they wish, and 5 paid educational days during their residency year. 


NORPIC is a member of the Association of Psychology Post Doctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC).  Applicants should follow the procedures outlined on the APPIC website. All materials are to be submitted electronically (via the AAPI Online centralized application portal), including the verification of internship eligibility and readiness by the academic Director of Clinical Training (DCT Portal). Three reference letters should also be included and submitted via the AAPI Online Reference Portal. Letters should comply with the CCPPP guidelines for letters of reference (see Appendix).

SCHEDULE OF DATES

JULY 2024

Internship Site Registration: Registration emails for participation in the Match are sent to Training Directors, who must complete the online registration process using the NMS Match System.

Applicant Registration: Beginning in July, applicants can register for the APPIC Match via the Match website at natmatch.com/psychint. Prior to registering, applicants should review the information in the Applicant Registration section of the Match website. Applicants are required to provide their Match Code Number on their AAPI applications, therefore applicants must register for the Match before submitting applications to internship programs.

Applicants must apply to internship programs using the AAPI application service. Application deadlines for training sites vary and may be found in the APPIC Directory.


OCTOBER 1, 2024

By this date, a list of internship programs participating in the Match is available on the Match website at natmatch.com/psychint.


DECEMBER 31, 2024

For applicants registering for the Match after this date, the applicant’s Director of Clinical Training must provide explicit authorization to NMS before the registration can be completed.


MONDAY, JANUARY 20, 2025

Phase I Rankings Open: Applicants and programs may begin to submit Rank Order Lists for Phase I of the Match using the NMS Match System.


FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2025

Phase I Rank Order List Deadline: Applicant and program Rank Order Lists for Phase I of the Match must be entered and certified in the NMS Match System by 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time.

No changes for Phase I, including new registrations for Phase I, withdrawals, entering or certifying rankings, can be made in the NMS Match System after this date. Applicants who register after this date may participate in Phase II of the Match.


FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2025

APPIC Phase I Match Day: Results of Phase I of the Match are released to applicants, internship Training Directors, and Directors of Clinical Training of academic programs. Result information is distributed by email and is available online in the NMS Match System beginning at 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time. Internship Training Directors must send letters of confirmation of the Match result for Phase I to matched applicants and their academic Directors of Clinical Training shortly after receipt of the Match results, in accordance with APPIC Match Policies.

Available Positions: A list of programs with positions available in Phase II of the Match is provided on the Match website at natmatch.com/psychint beginning at 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time. No action to fill positions offered in Phase II is to be taken prior to 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time.

Applications to Programs: Applicants who are eligible to participate in Phase II of the Match can submit applications to programs that are participating in Phase II beginning at 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time using the AAPI application service.


WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2025

Applicants and programs that are eligible to participate in Phase II of the Match can access the NMS Match System to update their status and profile information for Phase II (e.g., withdraw or reactivate, update contact information, etc.).


THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2025

Phase II Application Deadline: All programs participating in Phase II of the Match must accept applications submitted by applicants until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time. Programs may elect to continue accepting applications for Phase II of the Match beyond this deadline, but are not required to do so.


FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2025

Programs participating in Phase II can view and download applications from the AAPI system beginning at 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time.

Phase II Rankings Open: Applicants and programs that are eligible to participate in Phase II of the Match may begin to submit Rank Order Lists for Phase II using the NMS Match System.


WEDNESDAY, MARCH 19, 2025

Phase II Rank Order List Deadline: The deadline for submission of applicant and program Rank Order Lists for Phase II of the Match is 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time.

Post-Match Vacancy Service Opens: The APPIC Post-Match Vacancy Service provides information on available positions beginning at 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time. No action to fill positions remaining unfilled after Phase II is to be taken prior to 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time.


WEDNESDAY, APRIL 9, 2025

NMS Match System Closes: Information regarding the results of the Match for applicants and programs will no longer be available in the NMS Match System.



INTERVIEW PROCESS:

Candidates will be selected for interview and in accordance with the other residency programs in Canada, NORPIC will abide by the unviersal notification date of the first Friday in December each year.  Candidates will recieve the information related to the status of their interview and be invited to book their interview utilizing the National Match Services Interview Scheduler System and information on how to interface with this system will be provided in the email. 

All interviews are conducted virtually.  Candidates not selected for interview will also be notified by email on the same day.  

Please note, we are committed to only collecting information that is required to process your application. This information is shared only with those individuals involved in the evaluation of your internship application.  After the match process is completed, all application materials are destroyed and only AAPI files for matched residents are retained.

In your cover letter, please clearly indicate whether you are applying for one or more of our available rotations and clearly state which ones.  It is also important that when you are submitting your AAPI - that you check off the rotations that you are applying to in that application process as well.

PLEASE NOTE:  Applicants may apply to more than one rotation if desired but may not be interviewed for all rotations that are applied to.
